I found the following video courtesy of Domenico Bettinelli's blog. Bettinelli says: "If you’re over 30, are not in the educational establishment, and don’t have kids in school, you’re going to be astounded at what passes for math education today." I meet all of those criteria, other than having one child in pre-school, and indeed I was very much astounded. I can only hope that the textbooks mentioned in this video are not in widespread use, but unfortunately I suspect that they are. I will definitely be paying close attention to my kids' math textbooks now that I have seen this.
